Ling began her career when she was in grade school. At the age of 14 she decided to join the Chinese People's Liberation Army where she spent three years in a performance troop entertaining soldiers stationed in Tibet. In 1991, she immigrated to American where she began her acting career. She is known for her roles in "Wild Wild West", and "The Crow".
